Your Recommendations on iPad Cases?

We work with a population that often leads us to be reluctant to hand over our breakable things, such as an iPad. Especially when using apps that incorporate movement and, sometimes, shaking of said iPad. Susan H. inquired on the SpeechTechie Facebook Page:

I would love to know your thoughts on iPad cases. They seem necessary with the school aged population. Currently my case only forms an easel in landscape, but I would love it to do portrait also for those apps that don't flip. Also my case is taking a licking- Recommendations appreciated!

I am reluctant to offer a recommendation at this time, only having bought the original Apple iPad case. Which I am reluctant to recommend. It may be the one that Susan is speaking of, actually, and though I have used it very gently, somehow looks nothing like the picture here:

Instead, it looks like I regularly sneeze on it full-force (I don't).

I have heard really good things about The Defender (see review on Speech Gadget here), but it doesn't seem to be what Susan has in mind in terms of stand-up-in-portrait mode capabilities.  So besides recommending that Susan consult the TiPB store (a good resource associated with an independent blog about all things iOS), I am going to throw it out to you, SpeechTechies.  Do you have a case in mind for Susan (oh, and Susan, do you have an original iPad or iPad 2)?  Do you all have anything to say about cases in general?  Please provide links where possible.  Thanks!

  1. I have a Roocase for my iPad 1. Here's the company's website, but I bought mine on Amazon.

    And the Amazon link-

They have a bunch of different designs. The one I have can stand up in portrait and landscape. It doesn't stand up high, but it's high enough for kids in a group to see. It is made of leather and protects it somewhat, but is not a hard case. They might have some with harder cases. They also come in a variety of colors. I have a red one. Overall I really like it a lot and would recommend it.

  2. I highly recommend otter box. I have otter box cases for both my iphone and camera. My iPhone has been dropped and was even left in a parking lot for hours and it still doesn't have even a scratch on itl. The price for otter box cases is a little steep but from my experience, it is well worth it.

  3. I have a Clamcase, which is a combination case/stand with bluetooth keyboard. I like it overall and it is very sturdy, although I am still not used to the smaller keyboard.

  4. I have the OtterBox Defender and reviewed in on my blog. http://tinyurl.com/4qmxgtn It is awesome for protection, but the stand does not allow for portrait viewing. I have yet to find a case that is great for protection and has a great stand.

  5. Thanks for comments so far guys. Deb, I knew I saw that review someplace!!! Good point- may be tough tradeoff, stand vs. protection.

  6. I've heard the Otterbox and Clamcase are amazing. I have a Phillips that converts to a stand, but it's bulky, the outside cover is worn, I've had it about 2 months and the Velcro is wearing out. I have an Otterbox Defender case for my Evo and LOVE it!

  7. SLPs in my district opted for the Otterbox. To use it in portrait mode, one coworker came up with the quick fix of supporting the bottom with a ruler.

  9. If you're using the iPad 1, then look at the new case from AMDI, iAdapter. Rubberized case, rechargeable battery, speaker, cover for home button - haven't used it, but looks like a good case. Little pricey though - $200

  10. Has anyone used the Zaggmate? It looks sturdy, but I like the fact that the Clamcase can be used in different angles (I'm looking for a keyboard, too). I have the Zagg screen protector, which seems to work really well with little hands (lifetime warranty doesn't hurt, either). I also have the apple cover, which I am not crazy about.

  11. I know I am a bit late posting, but has anyone tried the Yogi by Joby (gorillapod)? I use their stand for my Flip Camera all the time and love it. Seems like the way it attaches, it could work with the iPad 2 magnetic cover.

  12. I have an iTouch and am now looking into getting an iPad. When I was at Best Buy the other day, I looked at a hard case for iPad that when opened up, made the whole thing look like a laptop computer. A keyboard was included inside the case, hence the laptop look. Price was around $99. May be of interest for some...

  13. Have you seen the Shell iPad 2 case designed by TRTL BOT. It's a durable design with a retractable home button protector. It's great for students, helps keep them engaged in educational apps. http://kck.st/pxcAli
